阿雷基帕是秘鲁南部的大城市，仅次于首都利马，同时是阿雷基帕省的省会，由于是秘鲁宪法法院的所在地，常被称为“秘鲁的法定首都”，根据2017年的全国人口普查，城市人口约为1,008,290人。 该城位处海拔2,380米，周边火山密集，共计有80座，其中最著名的是埃尔米斯蒂火山，它曾在1438年和1471年期间强烈爆发，最近一次小型爆发在1870年。目前该城保存了很多状况良好的西班牙殖民地建筑物，大部分结构由白色的火山岩石建成，故该城有着“La Ciudad Blanca”的称号。古城区于2000年被列为世界遗产。
