In the Bible the Apostle Paul writes: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” The word “hymn" comes from the Greek word “hymnos” which means “a song of praise”.
In his day, people tended to sing almost exclusively metrical psalms and so Bonar set out to write a number of simpler hymns, particularly aimed at young people. This hymn is his most famous.
