宋淇1919年出生于浙江吴兴，宋淇的父亲宋春舫是我国现代剧坛上较早研究和介绍西方戏剧及理论的文化名人，也是坊间著名藏书大家。宋淇毕业于燕京大学西语系，是中国现当代著名文艺评论家、翻译家，在《红楼梦》研究方面为学界所称道。
