The shells of most mollusks (those without mother-of-pearl shell) are made from Calcite, and fewer will produce and display Aragonite, which forms hexagonal shaped crystals.

When looking at radiographs of cultured pearls online, it looks as if there is a gap between the nucleus and the nacre. At first I thought that this gap was a flaw; that the nucleus was seperated from the nacre.

A pearl needs thick nacre to have excellent luster (a thin-nacre pearl will not have great luster) but that doesn't mean that a pearl with .6mm of nacre will necessarily have better luster than a pearl with .4mm of nacre. 2004年6月22日 · This Tahitian pearl from Rikitea is more than 50% nacre. The minimum standard for export is 0.8 mm, but nearly every pearl we slice has between 2-4 mm. They are growing these outside the lagoons and getting incredible deposition, but still growing them for the full 18 month. This is the sort of nacre that would make Mikimoto proud!
