The shells of most mollusks (those without mother-of-pearl shell) are made from Calcite, and fewer will produce and display Aragonite, which forms hexagonal shaped crystals.

2023年12月19日 · Chemically speaking the nacre is very similar, but you're right, not all nacre lays the same. With akoya, thick nacre is very important in achieving high luster because it's a measurement of both reflected light and iridescence. You won't have light interference creating iridescence if the nacre isn't thick enough.

When there is a drought or when weather is extremely cold for a few years this shows up in the rings of trees and I wondered it this pearl is suffering from something along that line.

2014年6月16日 · According to the wikipedia article on nacre, argonite structures are 0.5 nanometers in thickness. This is incredibly small. When looking at radiographs of cultured pearls online, it looks as if there is a gap between the nucleus and the nacre. At first I thought that this gap was a flaw; that the nucleus was seperated from the nacre.

However, I recently saw a thin nacre coating in a small baroque south sea pearl (it's in a strand) through the drill hole (I'm estimating about .5-.8mm) but the luster of the pearl is great. If I'm not mistaken, good luster also may be produced by good nacre quality aside from nacre thickness.

2018年4月14日 · Luster and nacre thickness are interrelated but not the same. A pearl needs thick nacre to have excellent luster (a thin-nacre pearl will not have great luster) but that doesn't mean that a pearl with .6mm of nacre will necessarily have better luster than a pearl with .4mm of nacre. 2022年2月16日 · Hello, I know the law for the nacre thickness of Tahitian pearls was scrapped in 2016, but was then the law was reverted back. Do anyone have any sources or articles regarding this? Been trying to google with no luck .

2004年6月22日 · This Tahitian pearl from Rikitea is more than 50% nacre. The minimum standard for export is 0.8 mm, but nearly every pearl we slice has between 2-4 mm. They are growing these outside the lagoons and getting incredible deposition, but still growing them for the full 18 month. This is the sort of nacre that would make Mikimoto proud!
