The flag of Nova Scotia consists of a blue saltire on a white field defaced with the royal arms of Scotland. Adopted in 1929 after a royal warrant was issued, it has been the flag of the province since January 19 of that year.

After receiving royal warrant from King George V in 1929, the flag of Nova Scotia was the first flag in the overseas Commonwealth to be authorized by royal charter. Derived from the ancient arms granted in 1625, the flag features the province’s shield extended in a rectangular shape.

Nova Scotia entered Confederation under the British North America Act in March 1867. While there were celebrations around the province, in Yarmouth buildings were draped in black crepe in protest. Some people welcomed the union, while others were resentful at being forced into it.
