The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), sometimes inaccurately called the koala bear, is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae. Its closest living relatives are the wombats.

Koalas are nocturnal animals and are arboreal which means they live in trees. Some Koalas are mainly solitary animals, except for the breeding season and tend not to congregate in large groups. Most live in societies and are in contact with other Koalas.

The Koala (phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal (tree dwelling), herbivorous (plant eating) marsupial. The word ‘marsupial’ comes from the Latin word marsupium, meaning ‘pouch’. Most, but not all, female marsupials have a permanent pouch in which to raise their young.
