Near its upper end, the lake surface lies more than 6,600 ft (2,000 m) below peaks less than 3 mi (4.8 km) away.

Lake Chelan is a 53 mile long naturally glacier-carved lake that is the third deepest in the United States. The Chelan river which flows out of the lake was dammed in the 1920's and raised the level of the lake and extended the length of the lake by a mile, but in summer and fall can leave the lake looking emaciated like an artificial reservoir.
