Once absorbed, iron binds to transferrin, a protein in the bloodstream, for transport to various tissues. Excess iron is stored in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow bound to ferritin, a protein complex. Bone marrow continuously releases iron for hemoglobin production in red blood cells.
