These little creatures prefer their own company, and usually bite when they feel threatened – either from humans or from other slow lorises – raising their arms and licking a highly toxic venom secreted from glands at their upper arm which pools in grooves on their canine teeth.

Slow Loris bites can cause painful swelling, and there’s only been a single recorded human death from a bite which is believed to be due to anaphylactic shock (an allergic reaction to the bite).

How deadly is the slow loris to a human? The teeth point up and outwards and are so closely packed together that the venom can rise up and along them by capillary action and enter the inflicted wound. These teeth are also effective at removing bark, allowing the animal to access its staple foods: sap and gum.
