Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was born near Wismar, on the Baltic Sea, and grew up in an affluent family. Poor health in his early twenties brought him to seek the warmer climate of Taormina, Sicily.

After von Gloeden’s death in 1931, the Italian authorities, considering his work as pornographic, destroyed an estimated three thousand glass plate negatives and prints and by the end of the Second World War, only a few hundred images survived.

Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was one of the earliest gay photographers of the male nude. His best known images were enormously popular among in the Victorian age and depict young men and teenage boys acting out Homeric themes and 'classical' fantasies.
