A big engine stuffed in a small car is the classic formula for a muscle car and the '61 Impala was, in relative terms, a downsized car.

There should be some 2-Dr HT production numbers out there though, and maybe some V-8 and 6-Cylinder production numbers as well. There were only 4 different Cubic Inch Engines available, 1 6-Cylinder and 3 V-8's. The only Engine I know for sure is the 409.

Chevy won the Grand National championship in 1961 with the 409. Pontiac won more races but Chevy had more points. The 409 also did well in drag racing against the Ford 390/401 and Pontiac 389 Trophy 425A. In '62 Ford brought out the 406 and Pontiac the 421 Super Duty.

2016年10月16日 · By the way, just to add a little more info, a Real SS could also have had a 409 in it, but now you are talking extra rare, as they only made 142 409's in '61. Now that's just 142 in any '61. I don't believe there is any documentation from Chevrolet on how many 409 cars also got the SS option, but in my opinion, there weren't many.

2011年11月4日 · And I knew people who did, and they bought the SS badges from Chevy dealer (and I know local SoCal dealers swapped them for buyers). So there are 1962 327/300 and 409/409 Impalas out there with all the power of SS models and more, that have badges, but they were likely not factory badged as SS. PEOPLE STILL FOUND A WAY TO GET AN SS.

2010年4月12日 · The fact that the new Chevys were larger was a good reason for adding the 409 engine. For the first time this year, Impala SS models were in their own separate series. The V-8 sport coupe sold for $2,947 and weighed 3,570 lbs. The counterpart convertible was priced at $3,212 and weighed 3,645 lbs. The 409-cid V-8 came in 340- and 400-hp versions.

2020年9月30日 · Hi, new here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have found someone who is selling a 1962 SS Impala with dual carb 409. I checked its Vin number and the engine ID number and the six digits of the engine ID do not match the vin (does have “QB” id number). This means the engine is not original to the car, correct?

The Impalas were finless for 1961 and the Impalas retained the three-lamp motif at the rear. 1961 would be the year that the first true muscle car was introduced, the Chevrolet Impala SS. A mid-year option on the 1961 Impala was the Super Sport which was available on all body styles.
