In Blandford St. Mary itself there were originally two settlements; Martel in the N. and St. Mary in the S., each with its own open fields. (fn. 1) A large expanse of downland to the W. was not enclosed until 1716, when it became Down Farm, later The Down House estate ( see (22)).
