I hiked in from the trailheads along Thompson, Ramey, Five Mile, Cinnabar, and Martin Creek. Only saw one elk camp while I was there the last week of archery season if that tells you anything.

I always hear about elk and deer staying on north-facing slopes and staying in the shadows of trees, etc while bedded....they get up and move to shady spots if the sun shines on them.

My essential seasonings are garlic salt (sprinkle it on steak, grouse, deer, elk when grilling), lemon pepper (if I expect to catch fish), black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, and oregano. I also take butter - especially for potatoes. Butter is fine as long as it doesn't get above room temperature.
