The Framingham Heart Study encourages the interest and proposals of investigators in order to maximize the scientific value of epidemiologic data from the more than 15,000 individuals who have enrolled in FHS over the past seven decades.

Our Study began in 1948 by recruiting an Original Cohort of 5,209 men and women between the ages of 30 and 62 from the town of Framingham, Massachusetts, who had not yet developed overt symptoms of cardiovascular disease or suffered a heart attack or stroke.

In 1948, the Framingham Heart Study – under the direction of the National Heart Institute (now known as the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute or NHLBI) – embarked on an ambitious project in health research.

The Framingham Heart Study (FHS) is an epidemiologic study begun in Framingham in 1948 with 5,209 men and women. Since that time the FHS has studied three generations of participants resulting in biological specimens and data from nearly 15,000 participants.

On September 29, 2023, the Framingham Heart Study celebrated its 75th anniversary. In 1948, under the direction of the National Health Institute (now the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the NIH), researchers of the Framingham Heart Study opened its doors and recruited 5,209 men and women, about two-thirds of town’s adult population.

We reviewed the background of the Framingham Heart Study. It did not develop without problems. However, it did develop and it has continued to yield valuable information for over 40 years. The combined efforts of federal, state and local agencies have no better example of how well they can work together and how productive they can be. References
