The Australian Koala Foundation is proud to release an updated version of our National Koala Tree Planting List. Rather than publish the full Koala Tree list, we have decided to make things easier for those simply wanting to plant trees for Koalas.

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), sometimes inaccurately called the koala bear, is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae. Its closest living relatives are the wombats.

What is the koala? The koala is an iconic Australian animal. Often called the koala “bear,” this tree-climbing animal is a marsupial—a mammal with a pouch for the development of offspring.

The Koala (phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal (tree dwelling), herbivorous (plant eating) marsupial. The word ‘marsupial’ comes from the Latin word marsupium, meaning ‘pouch’. Most, but not all, female marsupials have a permanent pouch in which to raise their young.

Koalas are fascinating creatures that have adapted to a life in trees through their physical features, diet, and behavior. However, they face significant challenges, including habitat loss and the impact of climate change.

Koalas are one of Australia’s most beloved marsupials, instantly recognizable by their fluffy ears, large noses, and sleepy expressions. Native to the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia, these unique animals have become symbols of the country’s rich wildlife.

Tree species are broken down into primary food trees that offer the highest levels of nutrients and the lowest amounts of phenols and tannins. Primary food trees are usually found on rich, thick soils with a higher nutrient content and greater access to water via regular rainfall.
