Marcel Mauss (born May 10, 1872, Épinal, Fr.—died Feb. 10, 1950, Paris) was a French sociologist and anthropologist whose contributions include a highly original comparative study of the relation between forms of exchange and social structure.

Marcel Mauss (May 10, 1872 – February 10, 1950) was a French sociologist known for his role in elaborating on and securing the legacy of his uncle, Émile Durkheim and the journal L'Année Sociologique.

Mauss was appointed full professor of sociology at the Collège de France on February 3 1931, having been elected by the Assembly of Professors at the end of November 1930 on the nomination of Antoine Meillet.

The French-born sociologist and anthropologist Marcel Mauss is best known for his analysis of gift-giving societies and their relationship to more modern economic systems. Mauss is often described as the father of modern French anthropology.
