The pyramid of Djoser, [a] sometimes called the Step Pyramid of Djoser or Zoser, Step Pyramid of Horus Neterikhet is an archaeological site in the Saqqara necropolis, Egypt, northwest of the ruins of Memphis. [4] It is the first Egyptian pyramid to be built. The 6-tier, 4-sided structure is the earliest colossal stone building in Egypt. [5]

Major pyramids located here include the Pyramid of Djoser—generally identified as the world's oldest substantial monumental structure to be built of dressed stone—the Pyramid of Userkaf, the Pyramid of Teti and the Pyramid of Merikare, dating to the First Intermediate Period of Egypt.

For many years, the Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara, Egypt, was considered to be the world's earliest pyramid, constructed by Pharaoh Djoser's royal architect, Imhotep, in approximately c. 2630 BCE. More recently, however, archaeologists have discovered that similar structures were being built at around the same time on the other side of the world.
