Locomotive classification on the Pennsylvania Railroad took several forms. Early on, steam locomotives were given single-letter classes. As the 26 letters were quickly assigned, that scheme was abandoned for a more complex system. [1]

After WWII, in 1945, the PRR still operated more than 4000 steam locomotives. During the next 10 years, the PRR began to replace them all with diesels. On Saturday Oct. 20, 1957 a passenger excursion train from Baltimore, powered by #559, an L-1s class 2-8-2 arrived in Northumberland.

The Pennsylvania Railroad’s Class R (later H3) steam locomotives became the primary mainline freight locomotive. The Altoona Shops built more than 825 between 1885 and 1898.
