Porthcurno was the great telecommunications hub of the nineteenth century, starting from 1870 when the first underwater telegraph cable from India came ashore at Porthcurno. The transatlantic cable and twelve others followed, and the Cable and Wireless company set up a global training centre for their technical staff at Porthcurno.

From Land's End to Porthcurno is a scenic 5 mile / 8 km coastal walk, including Nanjizal bay, and from Porthcurno on to Lamorna Cove is 6 miles / 9.5km, and walking from Lamorna on to Penzance is a bit less.

There are three beaches at Porthcurno. The main Porthcurno beach is a large family beach with seasonal lifeguard cover, an easy 200m walk from a bus stop, cafe, toilets, pub, telecoms museum, car park, and the scenic coastal footpath.
