Selimiye Mosque (Greek: Τέμενος Σελιμιγιέ Témenos Selimigié; Turkish: Selimiye Camii), historically known as Cathedral of Saint Sophia or Ayasofya Mosque (Turkish: Ayasofya Camii), is a former Christian cathedral converted into a mosque, located in North Nicosia.

The Selimiye Mosque in Nicosia is a stunning example of Gothic and Ottoman architecture. The mosque accommodates 2,500 worshippers, with 1,750 square meters dedicated to prayers. The structure is distinguished by its towering minarets, high vaulted ceilings, and intricate stonework characteristic of the Gothic style.

2024年8月1日 · The mosque is a former christian church transformed by the Turkish but still preserving the architecture. It is big and very beautiful and nicely complete the old Turkish town of Nicosia. It worth visiting along with buyuc han and bazaar.

The Selimiye mosque, originally the Roman Catholic cathedral of Ayia Sofia, is the oldest, and one of the finest examples of Gothic art in Cyprus, the work of the French masons who accompanied the Crusades. The monumental main door and the carved stone window above it are of particular interest.

Right at the heart of the old city of North Nicosia is the Selimiye Camii (or mosque), housed in the former St Sophia Cathedral. There has been a religious building on this site since 1193, when a small church was built for the coronation of King Amaury in 1197.

The Selimiye Mosque. The foundation stone of this great church was laid in 1209 under Archbishop Thierry but due to financial constraints the work was not completed until 1326.

North Nicosia’s most prominent landmark (also clearly visible from the southern half of the city), the Selimiye Mosque is a beautiful building. A cross between a French Gothic church and a mosque, its fascinating history stretches back to the 13th century.

With the occupation of Nicosia by the Ottomans (1570), St. Sophia Cathedral was transformed into a mosque and two minarets were added to a western part of the building. In 1954, the monument was renamed "Selimye Mosque" in honour of Sultan Selim II (1566-1574) who ruled at the time of the conquest of Cyprus.

The Selimiye Mosque is the main mosque of Nicosia and the oldest remaining Gothic church in Cyprus. The Lusignan church turned mosque is built over the bones of an earlier Byzantine church. Its interior dimensions are 217 feet by 69 feet.
