The Union of the Soviet Socialist Republic is also known as the Soviet Union or the USSR, which was established on the same territory after the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917 with the great October Revolution.

In the aftermath of the war, the Soviet Union consolidated the territory occupied by the Red Army, forming satellite states, and undertook rapid economic development which cemented its status as a superpower. Geopolitical tensions with the United States led to the Cold War.

The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, abbreviated to USSR, was a socialist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized.
