When no land is available to poor farmers in productive lowland areas, they often have no option other than to clear land on steep mountain slopes where flooding and erosion are inevitable. Farming in such areas often begins in areas that have been logged recently.

2024年7月1日 · The agricultural sector in the Philippines has undergone significant transformations since the country gained independence in 1946. Initially focused on subsistence farming, the sector gradually shifted towards commercial agriculture, with an emphasis on cash crops for export.

In this paper, we show the salient features of the country’s poverty situation in a hope to contribute to the existing knowledge about the poverty condition and to the formulation of better strategies for reducing poverty.

Upland farm families must place primary or exclusive emphasis on subsistence food crop production. The land use systems that result from the pursuit of these needs, however, are the least ecologically sustainable alternatives.

Agriculture is the primary source of income for poor rural people, and the only source for many of the poorest households. Most of them depend on subsistence farming and fishing for their livelihoods. Illiteracy, unemployment and the incidence of poverty are generally higher among indigenous peoples and those living in upland and coastal areas.

Members of households perform specific roles in the various processes of corn production, consumption and utilization. Corn is not primarily produced as a commodity to be sold for profit but as a subsistence crop to ensure food security for the household for an entire year.
