The thoracic cavity is an irregularly shaped cylinder enclosed by the musculoskeletal walls of the thorax and the diaphragm. Anteriorly, the thoracic wall consists of the sternum. Posteriorly, it consists of the 12 thoracic vertebrae and their intervening intervertebral discs.

The thoracic cavity or the chest cavity lies between the neck and the abdomen. It is bounded by the thoracic wall and extends from the diaphragm (below) to the superior thoracic aperture (above). The latter comprises of the first thoracic vertebrae, upper border of manubrium sterni and the first ribs on either side.
