Microalgae or microphytes are microscopic algae invisible to the naked eye. They are phytoplankton typically found in freshwater and marine systems, living in both the water column and sediment. [1] . They are unicellular species which exist individually, or in chains or groups.

Microalgae, an intriguing group of microorganisms belonging to the kingdom Protista, possess remarkable capabilities with numerous benefits. They are mostly photosynthetic, utilizing sunlight as an energy source, and can be as small as 2 to 200 µm in size.

Microalgae contain various types of pigments: carotenoids (orange color), xanthophylls (yellowish tint), phycobilins (red or blue color) and chlorophylls (green color). The content of carotenoids and chlorophyll in microalgae is usually higher than in some plants [ 79 ].
