The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets (VAAFM) facilitates, supports and encourages the growth and viability of agriculture in Vermont while protecting the working landscape, human health, animal health, plant health, consumers and the environment.

The Agricultural Development Division cultivates Vermont’s agriculture and food system through grantmaking, marketing, strategic collaboration, and connecting businesses and communities to vital resources.

Vermont has about 75 farmers markets throughout the state and is the national leader in maple syrup production. In addition, roasted coffee, chocolate, and dairy products were Vermont’s 3 largest agricultural exports in 2017.

Vermont is facing a dramatic shift in the agricultural sector due to economic and demographic changes. The key to the maintenance and development of the farms that form the backbone of our rural communities is to support the next generation of farmers.

2022年2月7日 · Agriculture is a principal engine for Vermont’s rural economy. Small towns cannot thrive without economic opportunity and agricultural innovation; open land must offer Vermonters a sustainable living, or it is vulnerable to development or under-utilization.

Vermont’s agriculture is growing. Sales of farm products now exceed one billion dollars, up by 32% since 2017. We have 12,470 farmers (41% are women), about the same as five years ago, but their average age increased from 55.9 to 57.7 years old.

February 19, 2021 | Montpelier, Vt. - Governor Phil Scott has issued an executive order creating the Governor’s Commission on the Future of Vermont Agriculture to study and strategize how best to grow agriculture in the Green Mountain State.

Over a quarter of Vermont farms (1,833) sell directly to consumers through farmers markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and other “direct market” channels.
