Argentine Antarctica, British Antarctic Territory, partially within the Antarctic Chilean Territory. The Weddell Sea is part of the Southern Ocean and contains the Weddell Gyre. Its land boundaries are defined by the bay formed from the coasts of Coats Land and the Antarctic Peninsula.

James Weddell FRSE (24 August 1787 – 9 September 1834) was a British sailor, navigator and seal hunter who in February 1823 sailed to latitude of 74° 15′ S—a record 7.69 degrees or 532 statute miles south of the Antarctic Circle—and into a region of the Southern Ocean that later became known as the Weddell Sea.

Weddell seals are the southernmost breeding mammal on the planet. They carve breathing holes in the sea ice to access their feeding grounds below. They are known for their otherworldly call, which sounds like a message from outer space! Scientific name: Leptonychotes weddellii. Average Length: 8 feet 2 inches – 11 feet 6 inches (2.5–3.5 meters).

Travelers to Antarctica still speak of James Weddell with awe. The Weddell Sea—one of the two great indentations into the Antarctic Continent—is a spawning ground of polar ice, yet in 1823 Weddell sailed further south than was conceivable at the time.

The Weddell Sea is situated in the Southern Ocean, south of the Atlantic Ocean and east of the Antarctic Peninsula. Along the icebound coastline, penguins cluster in noisy rookeries as Antarctic seabirds wheel overhead.

The Weddell Sea is famously the location where Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to cross the Antarctic was thwarted. In 1915, Shackleton had the ambitious plan to cross the Antarctic, including passing by the South Pole.
