The meaning of HALFPENNY is a formerly used British coin representing one half of a penny.

At first in its 700-year history it was made from silver, but as the value of silver increased the coin was made from base metals. It was finally abandoned in 1969 as part of the process of decimalising the British currency.

Originally the halfpenny was minted in copper, but after 1860 it was minted in bronze.

Before decimalization on 15 February 1971, there were twenty (20) shillings per pound. The shilling was subdivided into twelve (12) pennies. The penny was further sub-divided into two halfpennies or four farthings (quarter pennies). The pre-decimalisation British system of coinage was introduced by King Henry II.

After the Norman Conquest, and prior to the reign of Henry I (1100-1135) halfpence were produced by cutting the silver penny in half.
