In the 1960s she starred for two seasons as Catwoman in the television series Batman (1966–1967). Her other stage credits include Ziegfeld Follies in 1956, Lola in Damn Yankees! in 1961 and, in 1965, as Irma in regional productions of Irma la Douce.

Catwoman is one of Gotham City’s most prominent villains appearing in 15 episodes (12 of which are Julie Newmar). Catwoman was more prominent during the second season and Julie’s character took another slant. Sexual tensions began to develop, particularly in “The Bat’s Know Tow” where Catwoman asks for a date.

Julie Newmar was the first actress to portray Catwoman in the 1960s Batman television series. She later reprised the role by voicing her character in the two animated feature films Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face.
