Philanthropists and art patrons John and Dominique de Menil established the Menil Foundation in 1954 to foster greater public understanding and appreciation of art, architecture, culture, religion, and philosophy. In 1987, the Menil Collection’s main building opened to the public.

Still growing and housed in a landmark of modern architecture, the Menil is a local treasure and a global destination: an urban oasis open free of charge to all situated in a park and a “neighborhood of art.”

Spanning from the prehistoric era to the present day, the Menil’s holdings grew out of personal and intellectual passions rather than encyclopedic ambitions. The heart of the collection is comprised of artworks and objects gathered by founders John and Dominique de Menil.

Shaded by live oak trees, the Menil green spaces are integral to the museum’s aesthetic and experience and in uniting the 30-acre campus. The outdoor expanse includes Menil Park, McGovern Green, and a large grass lawn and deck located to the west of the entrance to the Menil Drawing Institute.

Permanent collection galleries feature ancient and Byzantine art, Surrealism, Modern and Contemporary art, African art, Pacfic Islands art, and art of the Americas and Pacific Northwest.

1 天前 · The Menil Collection celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Cy Twombly Gallery with special programs about the work and legacy of American artist Cy Twombly (1928–2011). The Cy Twombly Gallery opened in February 1995 and is the only permanent retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work.
