The two species share a slender and elegant physiology, but the Grant's can grow to more than twice the size of the Thomson's—roughly 180 pounds for the largest male. Grant's gazelles have a home range that stretches across East Africa, and unlike many other ungulates of the region, they can survive long periods between visits to watering holes. The vegetation they eat provides the gazelles with enough hydration to survive, even after the rainy season ends. And by roaming drier areas with few other animals, they can both avoid resource competition and lower the threat of predators.
