This is one of the most confusing plants for plants! This kind of hydrangea is a macrophylla, or big leaf variety. There are several other types of hydrangeas, including panicale, arborescens (ilke Incrediball and Annabelle), and climbing hydrangeas). Within this category there are serrata (a category) and other hybrids, such as Endless Summer (a trademarked hybrid). Some people cover them with burlap. I don't have time or interest in that but I've heard that can help protect them from the cold.

More about hydrangeas because more and more questions keep rolling in! This is a macrophylla/big leaf type, where the buds that make flowers formed on last year's stalks ("old wood" type). If there is no life on your stalks it's probably time to cut them back. The reason I say it's optional is because you can be lazy and leave them and the new growth (on which buds will form for NEXT year) will likely cover them up.Many people had cold snaps this year and flowers will be reduced or non-existent.
