Pinching dahlias: Why? It helps plants to produce more lateral (sideways) growth. This means more stems and more flowers. It also means thinner, more useable stems for floral arrangements and bouquets. If you don’t pinch the central stalk will become quite thick (more like a broom handle) and you won’t get as many flowers from your plant. So if you like cutting flowers we recommend you pinch.
