Liver Boletes (Suillellus amygdalinus) grow in association with Live Oaks here in California. They are technically edible, but have a sour taste and can easily be confused with the toxic Satan’s Boletes (Rubroboletus sp.). The pores and flesh stain dark blue when bruised due to enzyme mediated oxidation of organic acids in the flesh (the color change can be reversed with lemon juice).
